A More Fair and Transparent Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program
On December 14th Immigration, Refuges and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced big changes regarding the process to sponsor grandparents and parents for Canadian permanent residence. Every year this program is flooded with applications, and many applicants are denied access to this program if they are not able to submit their applications within the first few days in January. Prospective applicants will now be chosen by lottery.
As of January 3, 2017, an online form is accessible online for anyone wanting to sponsor their parents or grandparents. This form will be available for 30 days. On February 2, 2017, IRCC will remove any duplicate applications and randomly select 10,000 people who will be invited to sponsor a parent or grandparent for Canadian permanent residence under the family class.
If a sponsor is invited to apply, they will have 90 days to submit a complete application, that will be available online as of January 9th 2017. Those who are not selected to apply may indicate their interest to apply again in 2018.
Since the selection process is now random, and capped at 10,000 applicants, the Super Visa program available to parents and grandparents is an attractive alternative for many who will need to wait until 2018 to try their luck again. The Super Visa permits parents and grandparents to remain in Canada for up to two years without having to renew their status. Although important considerations like medical coverage and ability to work in Canada are certainly at issue with the Super Visa alternative, this program is a good tool to re-unite families faster in Canada.
